Both the men producers and the (thirty-seven) women producers (and senior executives) we interviewed were agreed that there had been a significant change during the 1980s in the employment of women as TV producers. By 1991 women occupied three of the top eight programme posts at the BBC and Channel Four. By 1993 there were four women on the thirteen-person BBC Board of Management. At some point soon after the year 2000 a majority of senior producers in British television may be women; and women may occupy onehalf of the top positions in the BBC by 2000. On the other hand, there have been other advances of women, followed by retreats, in the history of British broadcasting: the 1930s, 1950s and 1970s saw reductions in the number of senior women compared with the previous decades.
