Two non-factual categories of programming account for the great bulk of the Top Forty rated programmes each week on British television.

Table 6.1 shows that 84 per cent of these most highly viewed programmes in 1991 belonged to either drama/fiction (from soaps to movies) or light entertainment (which includes comedy, quiz/game shows and ‘people’ shows).
