ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various counselling skills or intervention strategies which teachers can use to deal with the concerns or difficulties which their students present. The chapter begins with strategies which build on the listening skills, which were discussed in the previous chapter. The emphasis is on the typical day-to-day interactions teachers have with students. Many of these are brief and take place in corridors, dining rooms, sports fields or as students make their way out of classrooms. These interactions provide possibilities for ‘counselling on the run’.
