ABSTRACT

In conversation once with Jean I used the word ‘conversion’. We were both struck by the irony of the word. In everyday currency it tends to be used when speaking about how people are converted to a religious worldview. In my case, it was a conversion against institutionalised religious life, towards the freedom to think for myself and be the kind of person I wanted to be, to live out my values of love and justice, honesty and autonomous living. The journey towards living out those values was painful and slow.
