ABSTRACT

This chapter1 deals with narratives of 'jealousy' amongst the Paresi, an Arawak-speaking group of hunter–gatherers and horticulturalists of the Brazilian Mato Grosso. The data for this chapter were collected during ten months of fieldwork in 198–13. Using myths,2 interviews and narratives, it examines the social contexts in which jealousy is expressed and analyses its connections with indigenous notions of community, sociability, and the achievement of harmony in daily life.
