ABSTRACT

Using Kolb’s descriptions of learner types, all teachers could identify named pupils whom they have taught who would more or less fit one of these four descriptions. But, of course, all pupils will exhibit learning behaviours which fall into more than one of the categories. However, there is likely to be an emphasis on one of the four types with all pupils. In addition, pupils do not remain static in their learning styles. Many learn different approaches and indeed one of the reasons for teaching study skills, although not necessarily under this heading, is to broaden pupils’ experience and expertise as learners. Similarly pupils will naturally develop as learners with age, experience, maturity and motivation. Teachers who have had experience of teaching adults will be very much aware of these changes.
