ABSTRACT

The Belbin inventory of team roles can help to improve team performance in a number of ways:

• The team can understand its composition, analyse how it works and identify the possible causes of its problems;

• Recruitment to the team can be managed to ensure that the balance of the team roles is consistent with the task;

• Development needs can be identified and latent talents brought into play; • Teams set up for specific purposes can be designed to optimise effectiveness as long

as the task is clear and the team roles are seen as more significant than other existing roles or status;

• Development planning and career succession can be better managed; • Individual and team reflection can be improved.
