ABSTRACT

We begin with a brief overview of the range of technologies which are available for distance education today, then look at some examples drawn from distance education at basic education level and/or from developing country experience to illustrate the diversity which exists in practice. After reviewing some of the successes and failures which have been reported in previous years in using technologies specifically for basic education, we identify some commonly encountered problems. Drawing on the examples and case studies documented earlier in the chapter, we conclude by considering some implications of applying technologies.
