ABSTRACT

The previous chapter discussed the way cultural patterns underlie different modes of entrepreneurship, and many of the ways in which entrepreneurial activity can fuel economic development. The American economy is certainly one that has historically reaped enormous benefits from a relatively open entrepreneurial atmosphere, and a culture that has celebrated the enterprising spirit. Yet not all of U.S. society’s cultural attitudes celebrate the entrepreneur. In fact, many aspects of popular culture are openly hostile to the business world and the people who inhabit it. In this chapter, we would like to explore the ways activities in the market, particularly in the culture industry, shape and redefine the entrepreneurial values which have traditionally supported the market process.
