ABSTRACT
There are basically two types of amphitheatre: those that were chiefly functional and had little or no architectural adornment or decoration and those that were among the architectural jewels in the array of civic monuments that adorned the greatest cities of the Roman empire. This latter type of amphitheatre is an ‘amphitheatre in the imperial style’. Let us look at those features that characterise such monuments.
