ABSTRACT

This chapter will present a case study of the Roman amphitheatres of the North African provinces.1 Two amphitheatres Carthage and El Jem,2 will be presented in some detail, while the others will form part of a broader survey looking at wider trends and implications rather than individual monuments. This study aims to understand these monuments both within the framework of their provincial setting as well as within that of the wider context of the Roman empire and its mechanisms for the dissemination of architectural styles and knowledge.
