ABSTRACT

Initial consonant mutation has interested many linguists, and there have been numerous accounts of the feature from various theoretical standpoints. Some of this work will be of direct relevance to topics covered in later chapters, so will be reviewed there. However, in this chapter we want to examine some of the other accounts which remain of interest even if not directly connected with the theoretical concerns of the rest of this book. We do not claim that the following is a complete review of all that has been written on mutations in pre-and early generative frameworks, and only items concerned solely or mainly with Welsh are included. We have excluded simple descriptions of the feature as might be found in pedagogical grammars (with the exception of Morgan 1952), but nevertheless we hope we have been representative of the trends of argument if not wholly comprehensive.
