ABSTRACT
Lewis Mumford was born on 19 October 1895 in Queens, New York. On his mother’s side he was descended from German immigrants who were still ingrained in their home culture, while his father belonged to a well-to-do Jewish family. However, not only were his parents never married, but they only met for a few passing weeks. Mumford was born and raised as an only child out of wedlock.
