ABSTRACT
(a) Sir William Trumbull, extract from letter to Pope, 6 March 1714, Corresp., i. 212. A retired diplomat, Trumbull (1639–1716) had encouraged the young Pope before he came up to London. Their intimacy was a real one, despite the disparity in years, and Pope had dedicated the first Pastoral to Trumbull.
