ABSTRACT

Lewis Theobald (1688–1744), extract from The Censor, no. xxxiii (5 January 1717:1717 ed., ii. 18–20). In view of Theobald's later enmity toward Pope, this generous assessment of the Iliad is of particular interest. It is ironical that the extract concludes with an attack on Dennis. Prior to the extract, Theobald has been taking ill-natured and carping critics to task.
