ABSTRACT

This book began with the assertion that the promotion of EastWest détente has been an important but neglected theme in postwar British foreign policy. The objective of this study was not only to identify this theme historically, but also to make some assessment of the impact of British policy and to offer an explanation of that policy. Furthermore, it was suggested in the introduction that such a study might throw some additional light on the nature of détente and, it is hoped, make a contribution to an understanding of British foreign policy since the Second World War.
