ABSTRACT
Following the UN General Assembly resolution the British and Spanish Governments agreed to enter into discussions on Gibraltar. The first, of what was to be four rounds of talks, began at the Foreign Office in London on 18-20 May 1966. Before the first round of talks commenced, Sir Joshua Hassan visited London for discussions with British Ministers and prior to returning to Gibraltar he stressed that the Gibraltarians desired to remain British and emphasised that ‘we would never accept that the British Government has the right to change our status against Gibraltar’s wishes’.
