(a) gives Dickens’s fuller account, to Forster, of his ‘experiment’. The nature of Wilkie Collins’s suggestion to Dickens about Dr Manette may be inferred from his reply in (b), but (c) is added, in which Dickens further distinguishes his ‘manner’ from Collins’s. In (c), Dickens has been praising Collins’s Woman in White (1859–60), before he expresses some reservations.
