The review is signed ‘N.U.S.’ For Horne’s book, see No. 58. Several months later, Dickens was answering some criticisms Forster had made of The Chimes (while it was still in manuscript), and remarked: ‘File away at Filer [the economist in the story], as you please; but bear in mind that the Westminster Review considered Scrooge’s presentation of the turkey to Bob Cratchit as grossly incompatible with political economy’ (Life, 355). The Fool of Quality (1766-72), mentioned in this extract, was a novel by Henry Brooke, full of liberal sentiments and benevolence.
