ABSTRACT
Just as there was no Greek word precisely equivalent to our ‘art’, so there was no Greek word precisely equivalent to our ‘science’. (The word tekhne had a range of meanings overlapping the ranges of both English words, and so had sophia.) Nevertheless, various forms of scientific enquiry were being pursued in Athens during our period, though it is sometimes hard to say how widely or with what success.
