ABSTRACT

I IC3: the Penguin Book of New Black Writing IC3: the Penguin Book of New Black Writing is an anthology of commissioned work from writers of African descent based in Britain. Edited by Courttia N e w l a n d and Kadija Sesay, and published in April 2000, this book is considered by many to be a landmark collection of almost exclusively new work from across the writing community. The controversial tide of the collection is taken from the police identity code for black people (Identity Code 3), and is believed by the editors to be the only collective term that relates to people of African descent living in Britain. Divided into three sections reflecting first, second and third generations, the book focuses on four genres of writing: poetry, short fiction, essays and memoirs. IC3 features work from close to one hundred writers, including many established names such as David Dabydeen , Bernardine Evaristo, Jackie Kay and Benjamin Zephaniah. The collection also features many writers whose work was unknown at the time of publication.
