ABSTRACT
Chambers’ History of English claimed to be ‘the only History of English which has yet been given to the world’. It was advertised as ‘designed to communicate to young persons the rudiments of useful knowledge’. Robert Chambers (1802-71), is remembered as a founder of Chambers’ encyclopædia. The Cyclopædia of English Literature, an earlier work, was compiled jointly with his friend Robert Carruthers.
