ABSTRACT
By any standards the countries of the European Union cast a long ecological shadow. The scale of industry, transport, energy consumption and agriculture within the EU ensures that, while not perhaps matching the United States in critical areas such as carbon emissions, it is amongst the largest polluters and resource exploiters on earth.
