ABSTRACT

I have been asked to provide a (necessarily short) reflection on the role of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in the context of an increasingly differentiated integration process. No doubt I owe this assignment to my training and profession as a lawyer or, at least, a jurist. As everyone knows, jurists are not keen on futurology. But I imagine this subject is one which Jacques Vandamme would appreciate, for he has long been engaged in interdisciplinary research on the future of the process of European integration and indeed was responsible for some of my prospective studies in the field.
