ABSTRACT

Drake (1766-1836) was a doctor and literary essayist, whose extreme views on literature have gained him some notoriety. He fIrSt expressed his disrelish for Donne in a COlllment on satire; and developed his attack into a general dismissal, onjohnsonian lines, nearly twenty years later (Literary Hours, or Sketches Critical and Narrative (1798), 1800, ii, p. 170; Shakespeare alld his Times, 1817, i, p. 615).
