ABSTRACT
There are two additional extracts from Donne's verse, with comments:
[He quotes lines 37-8 of 'To the Countesse of Bedford' ('To have written then, when you writ,').] The following is a simile often copied by later poets:
Craik (1798-1866), journalist and literary historian, became Professor of English Literature and History at Belfast in 1849. He gave an account of Donne's poetry in Sketches of the History of Literature and Learning in Ellgland, 1845, pp. 168-72. It was reprinted verbatim in A Compendious History of English Literature, 1861, pp. 552-6.
