ABSTRACT

Ward (1837-1924) had a very distinguished academic career at Manchester and Cambridge, and was knighted in 1913. He became editor-in-chief of the Cambridge Modern History, and co-editor of the Cambridge History of English Literature. As a young man he edited the Globe Pope, and introduced Pope's version of Donne's Satyre ii and Satyre iv with some remarks on Donne (The Poetical Works of Pope (1858), 1956, pp. 324-5).
