ABSTRACT

A. B. Grosart's edition of Donne's poems called forth an article by Augustus Jessopp ('Donne's Epigrams', The Athenaeum, 1873 (2), pp. 81-2). The article raised the question of the authenticity of some Latin epigrams attributed to Donne and translated into English by Jasper Mayne. It started up a hot controversy in The Athenaeum, which shows professional scholarship already getting to work on the circumstances of the writing and publishing of Donne's poems.
