ABSTRACT

The writer of an unsigned Preface to The Second Part of Mr Waller's Poems, 1690, singled Waller out as the reformer of English verse after the harshness of such as DOl1l1e (A 3 V-A6r). The editor of the volume was Francis Atterbury (1662-1732) later Bishop of Rochester, a controversialist of considerable power in religious matters. It was probably he who essayed this definitiye formulation of the new poetic creed.
