ABSTRACT

The edition of Donne's poems published by Tonson in 1719 gave some preliminary matter which was reprinted in subsequent editions down to 1855. The dedication Donne's son wrote for the 1650 edition is given without explanation, as though it is by the poet himself Then there is an account of Donne's life, and a few critical observations, both drawn from Walton but reworded in eighteenth-century terms. (Poems on Several Occasions Written by the Reverend John Donne, D.D. late Dean oj Sf Paul's, 1719, A7v.)
