Ticknor (1791–1871), Professor of Belles-Lettres and French and Spanish at Harvard University from 1819 to 1835, travelled extensively in Europe. This extract from his Life, Letters, and Journals (2 vols, 1876), i, pp. 135–6, records his first meeting with Southey.
