ABSTRACT
In The Spirit of the Age (see No. 104) Hazlitt declared: ‘Mr. Southey’s prose-style can scarcely be too much praised.’ This favourable estimate is confirmed and supplemented in the following paragraph on Southey from the essay ‘On the Prose Style of Poets’ in The Plain Speaker (1826).
