ABSTRACT

Ferriar (1761–1815), a Scottish doctor and physician at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, was a regular contributor to the Monthly Review. In 1805 he published hostile reviews of both Southey’s Metrical Tales and Madoc. On the present review Southey commented: ‘It is stupid and blunt ill nature. A bluebottle fly wriggling his tail and fancying he has a sting in it’ (Curry, i, p. 408).
