Reprinted from The Letters of Percy Bysshe Shelley, ed. F. L. Jones (2 vols, 1964). The nineteen-year-old Shelley arrived in Keswick with his young bride early in November 1811. Although he disliked Southey’s political opinions Shelley admired his poetry and was prepared to praise him enthusiastically. As he saw more of Southey, however, his attitude quickly became hostile.
