ABSTRACT

From Miscellaneous Observations on the Tragedy of ‘Macbeth’: with Remarks on Sir T.H.’s Edition of Shakespeare (1745). This pamphlet reads like a preliminary essay towards an edition, with a painstaking attempt to establish the relevant historical background: indeed Johnson retained many of the notes for his edition of twenty years later (see Arthur Sherbo in Review of English Studies, n.s. ii, 1951). Warburton made an approving reference to it in his edition of 1747 (No. 111 below), for which Johnson was grateful.
