Yet the transparency of Mr Auden's analytic method produces the most charming and beautiful results here. The music of much of this poetry is magical, the imagery fantastic, and the power of expressing clearly and concretely the most subtle and difficult ideas gives constant delight. This poem is a masterpiece, and it is difficult to think that future generations will not discover new and ever deeper meanings in it.
