A distinguished scholar and author, Barzun (b. 1907) first taught at Columbia University in 1927, concluded as University Professor Emeritus, and has been Literary Adviser to Scribner's, New York, since 1975. He was awarded the Legion of Honour, and is an Extraordinary Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. His books include 'The French Race' (1932), 'Berlioz and the Romantic Century' (1950), 'Classic, Romantic and Modern' (1961), 'Clio and the Doctors' (1974), and 'Simple and Direct' (1975).
