ABSTRACT
A series of dramatic events and sweeping changes created the Atlantic world in the sixteenth century. That world slowly unraveled between 1770 and 1888, as the constituent societies reorganized themselves with different linkages. Connections that had mattered greatly in the seventeenth or eighteenth century dwindled into insignificance by the end of the nineteenth.
