ABSTRACT
Considerable progress has been made during recent decades into the investigation of early stages of agriculture in the tropics. However, the ubiquitous banana crop 1 is rarely dealt with by the disciplines involved and it is hardly mentioned in the fast expanding literature, thus giving the impression that bananas provide little evidence of importance.
