ABSTRACT
Archaeologists are fascinated by maize. Zea mays L. has undoubtedly been the subject of more debate, more publications, and more archaeological research than any other New World crop; perhaps more than all the others put together. A recent compendium of this research (Johannessen and Hastorf 1994) illustrates the point.
