ABSTRACT

Indian museums have played an increasingly important role as information storehouses meant to serve the needs of the public. The enterprise is extremely complex, however, a product of the size and ethnic diversity of the Indian people, their languages, and the varying histories of different parts of India. There has been an increasing diversity in the size and types of museums and collections in the country since the eighteenth century.
