ABSTRACT
It is often argued that formal education is good in itself but for many, especially in the 'Third World', this aspect of western culture is only seen as a means to a livelihood. Parents strive so hard to send their children to school, even when their family is poor, because they see this as the only inheritance they can leave their children. Many children, too, realize early in their lives that the only way to material success is through scholastic achievement.
