ABSTRACT

Cameroon has had three different colonial masters: it was a German territory from 1884 to 1914 and then was divided into two parts after the defeat of Germany in the First World War, one part, a fifth of the country and population, administered by Britain and the rest by France. Today, this influence persists as Cameroon is officially a bilingual and bicultural country. Unfortunately, this complex situation has profoundly affected the teaching of Cameroonian history, as each group has competing interests depending on their attachment to the colonial heritage.
