ABSTRACT

Recognition of the need for more and better public education about archaeology is a worldwide phenomenon that also has many proponents in the United States, led by national archaeological organizations and public agencies with archaeological programmes (see DiCicco 1988; Cleere 1989, p. 9; Rogge & Montgomery 1989; Stone & MacKenzie 1990; Knoll 1990, 1992; Potter 1990; McManamon 1991a; Milanich 1991; Smith & McManamon 1991).
