ABSTRACT

Cultural heritage cannot be saved and preserved without public support and participation. People are naturally curious about past cultures but the development of interest in heritage preservation depends largely on the current context and information about it. 'In Lebanon today the past is widely viewed in terms of metal detectors and export commodities: archaeological expertise is deployed not to develop or cherish cultural identity but to sell it off (Gathercole & Lowenthal 1990, p. 92).
