ABSTRACT

The past fifty years have been especially significant for the historical relationship between the Jewish people and the Spanish-speaking nations. The year 1992, which marks the fifth centennial of both the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and the discovery of America, presents us with a most fitting opportunity to survey developments in contemporary times. In this article we shall first describe the situation at the height of the Holocaust and in the years immediately following the Second World War. We shall then outline the form taken by these relations in recent years as reflected in certain basic issues which influence the reality of Jewish life in the Spanish-speaking countries, noting those which are deserving of further study.
