ABSTRACT
The word ‘democracy’ has Western origins, with its roots in ancient Greece. Democracy is derived from the Greek word demokratia, which stems from two related words, demos, the people, and kratein, to rule. In its Athenian construction, democracy symbolises rule by and of the people.
