ABSTRACT

The categories and chronologies outlined in the table are tentatively heuristic rather than definitively historic and to this extent, a revision, vision, and prevision of the contradictory parameters of past, present, and future cultural patterns rather than a precise overview of the last one hundred years. Cage’s work obviously does not occur exclusively in the seventies; indeed, as these pages have suggested, the positive creativity of the Cageian project informs postmodern culture from its very inception in the late thirties.
