ABSTRACT

The criticism of the accessing of high technology is that you’re simply using the cast-offs of what Alien Ginsberg calls the “suck-ghoul-strangle-death-culture.” The criticism of the accessing of world musics is that you’re raping the third world for your own petty gain…. The reply to the technology question is that since this technology exists, it’s up to artists to show that it should be used, that it can be used and that it must be used for peaceful purposes and the expansion of the human spirit. And the reply to the world musics question is that we are all in one world now-one planet-and if we choose to be interested in the musics of our neighbours, it is to be hoped that those musics are used with sensitivity and with a political consciousness that respects their point of origin.4
