ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the lexicon from the perspective of the linguist constructing a model of language structure rather than the typical lexicographer’s dictionary. We will address questions like: What should be included in the lexicon? In what form should it be included? How does the lexicon relate to the rest of the grammar? In Chapter 11 we will return to the lexicon from a different angle. Our concern there will be the MENTAL LEXICON to which language users must have access when constructing and interpreting sentences.
